About the Washington Commanders

The franchise started in 1932 as the Boston Braves, became the Boston Redskins in 1933, and moved to Washington in 1937. It won NFL championships in 1937 and 1942. The team played as the Washington Football Team in 2020 and 2021 and became the Washington Commanders in 2022.

Washington's Super Bowl era peaked in the 1980s and early 1990s, with wins in Super Bowl XVII after the 1982 season, Super Bowl XXII after the 1987 season, and Super Bowl XXVI after the 1991 season.

Josh Harris's ownership group bought the team in 2023. Head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels led Washington to the NFC Championship Game after the 2024 season. The 2025 season went the other way, a 5-12 finish marked by injuries, and Quinn returns as head coach in 2026.

The Washington Commanders play in the NFC East with the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants.

Northwest Stadium guide

Northwest Stadium is in Landover, Maryland, in Prince George's County, just east of the Washington, D.C. line. It opened in 1997 as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium, was known as FedExField from 1999 to 2024, and took its current name through a naming-rights deal with Northwest Federal Credit Union announced in August 2024. The open-air stadium seats about 64,000 after capacity was reduced in 2022 and some seats were added back in 2025. The team plans to leave for a new roofed stadium on the former RFK Stadium site in D.C., which received final D.C. Council approval in September 2025 and has a target opening of 2030. The old RFK Stadium has been demolished, and groundbreaking on the new building is planned for 2027.

Getting to Northwest Stadium

Metro's Blue and Silver lines stop at Morgan Boulevard station, about a mile from the stadium, roughly a 20-minute walk. After games, Morgan Boulevard and Downtown Largo are the stations open for entry. There is no regular shuttle from the station. Rideshare pickups and drop-offs use a designated rideshare lot off Sheriff Road.

Parking

A pre-purchased parking pass is required for stadium lots on Commanders game days, with the Gray Lot as the exception, and the stadium warns that lots can sell out. Accessible parking is available in designated lots with a valid placard and a prepaid pass. Tailgating is allowed in all lots except the H-Burgundy lot, and it must end at kickoff. The stadium suggests arriving about three hours before kickoff.

Arrival and entry

Tickets are mobile and managed through the team's ticketing app. The NFL clear-bag policy applies at every gate, so plan on a clear bag within the league limit or a small clutch. Fans walking from Metro should allow extra time for the mile-long walk. Check the Commanders' stadium pages for gate times and current rules before you go.

Seating tips at Northwest Stadium

Northwest Stadium is organized into five levels: the lower level, the club level, the upper level, and two suite levels. The lower bowl wraps the field in the 100s, with club seats above it and the upper deck at the top.

The stadium is open to the weather. On the lower levels, rows near the top of some sections sit under the overhang of the tier above, which can limit the view of high passes and kicks. Upper-level sideline sections cover the whole field and are a common choice for fans who want the full picture.

Buying Washington Commanders tickets on TixBit

Division games against the Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants tend to bring big visiting crowds to Landover, which drives demand for those dates. Late-season games in Landover are played outdoors, so dress for the weather. Compare lower-level and upper-level sideline sections on the seat map, and check the listing's seat notes. Never fees for buyers.
