The Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1976 and played their first season in the NFC West. They moved to the AFC West from 1977 through 2001, then returned to the NFC West in 2002. The team played its early home games in the Kingdome.

Chuck Knox coached the team through much of the 1980s, and Mike Holmgren took Seattle to its first Super Bowl, XL, a loss to Pittsburgh after the 2005 season. Pete Carroll's Legion of Boom defense won Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8 over Denver after the 2013 season, and the team lost Super Bowl XLIX to New England a year later.

Under Mike Macdonald, head coach since 2024, Seattle went 14-3 in 2025, the best regular season in franchise history. The Seahawks beat the Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game and then defeated New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, for their second title. In September 2026, the Khosla family, led by Vinod Khosla, completed its purchase of the team from Paul Allen's estate.

Lumen Field sits in Seattle's SoDo neighborhood, just south of downtown and Pioneer Square, on the site of the demolished Kingdome. It opened in 2002 and seats about 68,740 for NFL games. A partial roof covers about 70 percent of the seats while the field stays open to the weather. The stadium has carried several names: Seahawks Stadium, Qwest Field, CenturyLink Field and, since 2020, Lumen Field. It is known for crowd noise, shares tenancy with the Sounders and Reign soccer clubs, and hosted 2026 FIFA World Cup matches.

Lumen Field is one of the easier NFL stadiums to reach without a car. Link light rail serves both Stadium station and International District/Chinatown station, King Street Station for Sounder commuter rail and Amtrak is steps away, and more than 15 King County Metro bus routes stop within a few blocks. Colman Dock, for Washington State Ferries and water taxis, is less than a mile away. Rideshare drop-off points are at King Street and Occidental on the north side and Royal Brougham and Occidental on the south side.

On-site parking is limited to the Lumen Field garage under the Event Center and the North Lot, with more private lots in the surrounding SoDo blocks. Check the event page to see whether parking can be bought in advance. Lumen Field does not allow tailgating in its on-site lots, so most pregame gatherings happen in nearby bars and restaurants.

Lumen Field's seating is organized in three main levels: the 100 level lower bowl, the club level and the 300 level upper deck. The upper deck is steep, which keeps those seats closer to the field than at many stadiums, and the roof keeps most sideline seats dry in the rain.

The north end zone is home to the Hawks Nest seating area. Premium options include field seats, the Delta Sky360 Club and suites. Because the field and end zones are open to the sky, seats nearest the field can still get wet in a heavy rain.
